Tijdens de vele jaren dat ze vrijwilligerswerk heeft gedaan in voornamelijk Thailand, kreeg de oprichtster van KANIKA daar haar nieuwe naam toebedeeld. Dit omdat de lokale bevolking haar naam Gieneke niet kon uitspreken. Gepaard met traditionele ceremonie werd ze omgedoopt tot KANIKA, naar een klein lokaal bloemetje welke alleen ‘s nachts bloeit.
Dit bloemetje heeft als inspiratie gediend voor het huidige logo. De kleuren geven daarbij de 5 kenmerken weer waar KANIKA voor staat:

During the many years that the founder of KANIKA worked as a volunteer, mostly in Thailand, she was given her new name: as the locals had problems pronouncing her name, Gineke, they gave her the name KANIKA during a traditional ceremony. She was named after a small local flower that blossoms only during the night.
The flower has been the inspiration for the logo of KANIKA. The colours stand for the five characteristics of KANIKA:
